This self-guided neighborhood tour will immerse you in the exciting transformation happening in Homestead. You will get to know old buildings–imagined as new spaces as well as businesses–long-established and startups.
Just across the Monongahela River from the Pittsburgh City limits. Homestead was an important part of the history of labor relations in the United States, gaining international notoriety with the Homestead Strike of 1892. As the mills began to close post-WWII, when the need for steel declined, so did the population of Homestead by over half. The Homestead works Mill finally closed in 1986. In 1999 the Waterfront Mall was built and provided a step towards reclaiming population and a much-needed tax base.
We invite you to get re-acquainted with Homestead–a colorful and eclectic neighborhood–by exploring a diverse collection of buildings. Go behind-the-scenes. Have a unique experience. Be nebby!
